Cream rises to the top. Professor Samantha Mei Che Pang, has not allowed the satisfaction of her accomplishments to let her sit back and take it easy on a bed of laurels. There is always something more she wants to gain or give, and so she ascends.

As a young lady, and ever the excellent student, at the completion of an A-level university entrance examination she chose to enter nurse training at Queen Mary Hospital School of Nursing in 1974. In 1977, Miss Pang went on to obtain her general nurse registration in Hong Kong, and she followed that up with the attainment of her state nurse registration at Nursing Council of England & Wales in 1979. Not stopping here, she pursued her study in philosophy at Holy Spirit Seminary. She received her first degree in philosophy, summa cum laude, at Pontifical Urbanian University. While she worked at Haven of Hope Hospital, she made time to finish her Post-Registration Diploma in Nursing, awarded with distinction, from Hong Kong Polytechnic.

Because it was her wish to further develop her interest in nursing education she resigned from her clinical position as nursing officer. She earned her Master’s of Science in Nursing Education, again awarded with with distinction, from The University of Edinburgh in 1990. In 1999 she went on to receive her doctorate from The University of Hong Kong. Her doctoral thesis, Virtue to Value: Nursing Ethics in Modern, was subsequently published in the Value Inquiry Book Series by Rodopi 2003.

The start of her career as a nurse academic began with Dr. Pang accepting a teaching post at the The Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 1990. She has remained at this institution. Dr. Pang is at present Professor and Head in the School of Nursing.

Professor Pang has lectured and been published on the topics of nursing ethics, caring practices, and ethics and quality-of-life concerns in end-of-life care. In 2002 she received one of the first Fulbright Hong Kong Scholar Program awards to study the cross-cultural differences in making end-of-life decisions in the U.S. Her profound dedication to furthering nursing practices in China is evident in her continuous engagement in scholarly activities with nurses in different parts of China. Dr. Pang is presently a board member of National Nursing Ethics Association and a convener of the Chinese Consortium for Higher Nursing Education comprising 69 member schools from Greater China.

As of 2005, her name is listed as Chinese expert on the UNESCO Global Ethics Observatory. The World Health Organization has bestowed The Hong Kong Polytechnic University School of Nursing with the designation of Collaborating Centre for Community Health Services; Professor Pang serves as the Director of this Centre. Under her directorship, the Centre’s WHO projects include: disaster nursing; training community health responders in acute respiratory disease response; adolescent health, school nurse, and community health education for nurses in China.

Dr. Pang doesn’t sit still for long except to read a good book. Growth is also a factor in her off hours for she enjoys gardening. Hiking allows her an outlet for her in transitu leanings during her leisure time.

Professor Samantha Mei Che Pang can be found on the Madison Who’s Who Directory where she is looking forward to networking with you.
