Madison Who’s Who

“Paier College of Art is proud of its half-century tradition of training and educating artists. We are even prouder of the achievements of our students and alumni, who continue to receive high recognition from organizations representing the best in their chosen field and to enjoy the rewards of successful careers in the visual arts.

Although the tools and methods of art are constantly changing, the strengths of our college have not. Computers have indeed become an important part of the artist’s portfolio. These technologies are reflected in all our departments, and the computer labs are well equipped with the current hardware and software. However, at Paier, computers are not an exclusive focus. In many respects, as the power of digital imaging and communication increases, the need for artistic fundamentals becomes even more important.

Recognizing that, our Foundation Year studies are still executed in pencil, pen, brush, and camera. The Academic Department also offers challenging courses in the liberal arts, contributing to the development of the literate artist. Those who have the desire and ability to develop as artists are a select few. Paier College is dedicated to them–the future leaders in craft, communication, and culture.”

Madison Who’s Who Presents Fritz Doddy

Education / Degrees: 3yr College

from Madison Who’ Who

“Fritz Doddy is an enigma in a Yankees cap. He purposely mooned an orchestra to draw a less-than-perfect performance from them, yet he is exacting at his musical craft, as his many commercials and awards will attest. He loves to clown around and push the boundaries, but at home he’s a dedicated father with a wonderful family (equally talented, by the way).

In some ways Fritz is struggling with what he sings about in “The Feeling of Far,” that as we grow up we lose so much of what we had as a kid. We lose love or may not have love (”a house to go to when it’s raining outside,” a lyric echoed throughout). We lose the ability to dream freely. We experience fear. We lose the ability to laugh and instead have to keep our kid deep inside, as in “Nothing but Laughter”:

I like being nice to toll collectors
There’s nothing bug laughter deep inside my head
And why do children know
What grownups learn to forget?

Fritz is one of the few who’s able to keep and share all of his childhood gifts as a grownup, and he expresses this beautifully in “The Feeling of Far”.

from Madison Who’s Who

“The vision of Lolo Sarnoff combines classical European training with modern materials and new techniques. In the late sixties the artist was introduced to “fiber optics,” then a new technology. Her sense of adventure and previous scientific training led her to create brilliant works with this new medium. Lolo saw past the purely technical aspects to the beauty of this new material. Her works represented the new age that was just over the horizon, the blending of technology into the every day.

Some of Lolo’s most inspiring works can be seen in Washington, D.C. The Flame, an indoor version of the eternal flame, in memory of President John F. Kennedy–Lolo’s favorite piece–is located at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Opera House, and the Spiral Galaxy at Smithsonian’s Air and Space Museum’s Gallery of the Planets.

When she first started to exhibit, in the late sixties, Lolo called her work Flolite. By combining plexiglas with the strands of fiber optics, and after being lit, the pieces come to life. Plexiglas is not an easy medium to work with–the use of the table saw can be unforgiving–but looking at Mrs. Sarnoff’s work, it is hard to tell. The pieces flow effortlessly and curve gracefully and blend with their surroundings.

Next were added stainless steel and aluminum, used singly or combined with plexiglas, either free standing or wall-hangings. Some of the most playful and whimsical pieces combined these materials, as in The Playground of the Queeches, runner-up for a school project.

Lolo has exhibited nationally and internationally and has received many commissions from corporations, museums and collectors. Through the aesthetic of her art, Lolo combines her scientific background with her sense of joy and wonder of life in all its aspects.”

[..]
Writing is a passion, poetry is an art. When I began to write 6 years ago, I learned a great deal from many talented writers, poets, and editors. I was grateful to make so many friends through my journey in the world of writing. I met some wonderful people in my travels, especially where it all began, in the “Amazing Instant Novelist” writing site, AIN Keyword: NOVEL, and PoetWorks Press. I learned that writers should be admired and treated with respect for the talent they share with the universe. I learned that some of the best writers speak from the heart and soul. I met the most beautiful writers, poets, and editors from all walks of life that I could never forget. If writing is your dream, fulfill your dream; make it come true, do it for you.”

Madison Who’s Who

“Producciones Cisne celebrated its 40th anniversary this year. The company has played a central role as a magnet for artistic talent and has been instrumental in the international diffusion of Puerto Rican theatre. The company’s 40th anniversary naturally lent itself to acknowledging the contributions of actor, director, playwright and producer Myrna Casas, one of the company’s founders, its current president and the most awarded theatre person in Puerto Rico. Such was the case on November 10th at the Kumaras Center for the Arts and Etiquette when artistic director Miluka Rivera co-hosted an evening of acknowledgement for Myrna Casas, along with the Puerto Rican Federal Affairs Administration (PRFAA).

Casas entered the University of Puerto Rico pursuing a career in the “Visual Arts,” but soon abandoned this for a Bachelor’s Degree in Drama from Vassar College in Massachusetts. She received an MFA in Acting from Boston University, and earned a doctorate in Theatre Education with a thesis on Puerto Rican Theatre in the 18th Century. This served her well in her work at the University of Puerto Rico. Her published plays include Broken Glass in Time, Eugenia Victoria Herrera, Fools Alone, The Trap, San Juan Impromptu, The Great Eucharistic Circus, and Voices. This evening was a reunion of sorts for Puerto Rican actors who studied under Casas at the UPR and friends and admirers of this noted playwright, who turned out for an evening of food, music, poetry, anecdotes and tributes.”

What Kind of Entrepreneur Are You?

Welcome to Madison Who’s Who’s new blog, now open for business.

It will be our pleasure to regularly feature a member of Madison Who’s Who’s in this space. Madison Who’s Who is home to a richly diverse array of members, representative of every field of endeavor, from journalists to artist, architect to lawyer, CEO to entrepreneur.

We’ will also provide in this space articles related to those many professions that are represented in Madison Who’ s Who and welcome any suggestions for topics that would be of interest to the membership.

Valeria Maltoni’s interview with tech startup advisor Skip Shuda is of particular interest to entrepreneurs. Shuda, whose ” work focuses on helping entrepreneurs to build and grow their businesses…”, makes an interesting observation when discussing his research on entrepreneurial arch-types. He is asked what were the main characteristics he employed when categorizing his “8 Entrepreneurial Archetypes”.

“Deep motivation is front and center. I tried all sorts of dimensions when I tried to understand these patterns. I looked at stages of life, business experience, gender, business domain, business goals, etc. To some extent, these are all represented in the archetypes that I currently track. However, none of them captured the essence of the different entrepreneurs as well as their deep motivation for starting a business.”

Shuda’s studies led him to develop a quiz that highlights some of the key elements of the different “entrepreneur archetypes”. It would be interesting to discover which blend of archetypes are represented in Madison Who’s Who. For an interesting read, pop on over, and take the quiz.
