What’s The Fuss About Who’s Who?

So Who's Who in Business? If you ask ten different people what the definition of “who’s who” is it’s likely that you’d get ten different answers.  The term “who’s who” is used in so many different ways that it is is amusing to find how many times we incorporate it into everyday conversations.  We say things such as “the guest list read like a who’s who of corporate America.”  Do a Google Search and you’ll find ‘who’s who’ used in every fashion and manner, including the original incarnation of who’s who which came about in 1849.

According to Roget’s New Millennium™ Thesaurus, Who’s Who can also have the connotation of an “upper class group” or the “elite, gentry, and glitterati” of society.  Who’s who is also used loosely to represent an almanac or a social register, list or line up.

The last interpretation is how the Madison Who’s Who blog most often utilizes the phrase when we present books, websites and other compilations of outstanding people as well as outstanding events or items.  We also favor the biographical component to who’s who by bringing to the forefront various tributes or new biographies of the achievers and pivotal personalities through the corridors of time.

Almost every organization or institution also keeps their own who’s who.  There’s a who’s who of outstanding students in America as well as a Who Who’s of the most recognized teachers and even a Who’s Who of lawyers and a Who’s Who’ of athletes.  Every company has its own roster’s of who’s who and every profession looks within its own ranks to spotlight their most brilliant with a who’s who designation.

Peer to Peer Networking Can Grow Your Business

If you’ve heard of the term “peer to peer network” you probably associate it with a network of computers that share information.  However, the term peer networking, or peer to peer network is also becoming synonymous with a social networking or virtual communities.

A virtual community, e-community, or online community is a group of people that primarily interact via some form of mechanism such as letters, telephone, email or other social networking site rather than face to face. If the mechanism is a computer network, it is called an online community. Virtual and online communities have also become a supplemental form of communication between people who know each other primarily in real life. A computer-mediated community uses social software to regulate the activities of participants. Significant socio-technical change has resulted from the proliferation of Internet-based social networks.

In fact, social peer to peer networks are so important to business that many marketing experts agree that businesses that ignore this new form of social marketing do so at their own peril.

Is Global Networking a Business Priority?

With all the demands on our time made by our business, professional, and personal lives it is tempting to assign a lower priority to networking as an activity designed to meet new people. However, effective global networking is only a conversation away.

We are constantly being introduced to new people every day with no disruption to our schedules. Secondly, by not consistently widening our circles of acquaintances and contacts, we may be severely curtailing our chances for advancement and success. It is estimated that the average person knows about 250 people. And each of those people knows, in turn, another 250 or so people.

This means that for each new person you meet, you gain access to a potential pool of 62,500 people separated from you by just two degrees! Talk about effective global networking! Imagine the odds, then, that out of so many people, you would NOT find one person who would be a source of information about a better job, additional clients or customers, a speaking engagement or writing assignment, an investment opportunity, where to shop for better value, and much more.

Who’s Who on Wikipedia

Every once and a while Wikipedia seems to get some odd editing’s and phony entries. They get caught fast but are extremely annoying for people who rely on the tool for research. Have you ever wondered who’s who among the phony wikipedia hacksters?  Well, now there is a way to find out who’s making those edits, and posting junk.

Virgil Griffith, a computing and neural systems graduate bas built the Wikipedia Scanner. The scanner is a searchable database that users can tie millions of anonymous Wikipedia edits to organizations where they originated. The system does this by cross referencing edits with data on who owns the specific block of IP addresses. Virgil built the tool to find scandals and expose anonymous edits.

The available Wikipedia Scanner lists out 5.3 million edits from individuals residing in the CIA, Microsoft, Wal-Mart and in Congressional offices. Jimmy Wales, the creator of Wikipedia, is aware of this new service, but said that he needs more time to experiment before commenting.

Peer to Peer Networking Havoc

Social and peer to peer network sites such as Facebook and MySpace are causing headaches for some college administrators. The University of Ohio has been flooded with calls from parents requesting room mate, or dorm room changes for their children.  Apparently, parents are using peer to peer networking sites to check up on their children’s room mates, as well as their living quarters.

The University of Ohio reported that before this academic year they had about 45 requests which have been directly attributed to information that somebody saw on the Facebook site.  This is the largest of roommate change requests they have ever seen before school even starts. Thanks Facebook, oh, and who ever said parents aren’t internet savvy?

Technology Assists in Global Networking

It appears that those wanting to achieve effective global networking are turning to their mobile devices. This is according to a report posted by mmetrics.com which gives a glimpse of the mobile social networking market globally.  Of particular interest is the US audience which is traditionally hesitant to use the Web browser on their mobile handsets. However it’s the US market that is the largest volume of mobile subscribers accessing a social networking site with their mobile device.  Following the US were Italy, the UK, Spain, Germany and France respectively.

The US and UK audiences were college-aged (18 - 24) whereas the consumers in the other countries were younger (13 - 18). Not surprisingly, the most popular sites accessed via mobile were MySpace and Facebook, followed by YouTube in the US and Bebo in the UK.

If mobile social networks can generate a regular audience anywhere near the size of its PC-based visitors, the revenue potential for all those involved would be enormous.  It appears that effective global networking is going mobile.
