Madison Who’s Who Recognizes Dr. Peter Balslev-Clausen

Dr.Peter Balslev-Clausen is the President of the Grundtvig Society. The society was founded on September 8, 1947 with the objective to promote the awareness of N.F.S. Grundtvig’s life and his contribution to Danish as well as international culture. The society holds an annual meeting and, in cooperation with the Center for Grundtvig Studies, publishes an annual journal Grundtvig Studier that is sent to all the society’s members. The Grundtvig Society operates within the University of Aarhus’ Faculty of Theology in Denmark. N.F.S. Grundtvig was considered to be the father of Danish folk schools; he was a Danish minister, a theologian, a poet, a philosopher, a historian, a hymn writer, a social critic, and most relevantly an educator. His educational vision was for a unique school that served Danish people of all social standings, especially farmers.

In his position as President of the Grundtvig Society, Dr. Peter Balslev-Clausen sets academic standards, formulates policies and procedures, and acts as a communication link between members.

Dr. Balslev-Clausen received his Ph.D. in Theology from the University of Copenhagen in 1989. He is a Board Member of the Nordic Institute of Hymnology. He is secretary of the B.S. Ingemann Society, Hymn Committee Member of the Church of Denmark, Hymnological advisor to the Danish Government, and a Knight of the Order of Dannebrog.

He is also a devoted husband to Elsebet; they were married in 1971. Their happy union has resulted in four children: Jacob, Andreas, Anne Sofie, Katrine. In his leisure time he keeps his mind and body active by cycling, reading, and gardening.

Madison Who’s Who Recognizes Konrad Talbot

Research advancements in the field of neuroscience play a key role in the scientific and technological progress of the modern medical field. No one knows this better than Dr. Konrad Talbot, who currently works as a Research Assistant Professor in Neurobiology specializing in Molecular Neuropathology at the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Talbot received his Ph.D. in behavioral neuroscience from UCLA in 1989, and went on to teach as an assistant professor in psychology first at Mount St. Mary’s College in California (1990-1995) and then St. Olaf College in Minnesota (1995-1997). After introducing a seminar on biological psychiatry and initiating student-assisted research on Alzheimer Disease, he began pursuing full-time clinical research. This led him to become a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania (1997-2001). Finally, in 2001, Dr. Talbot accepted an invitation from Dr. Steven Arnold in 2001 to become a senior research investigator in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania, where he works today. Since his faculty appointment in January of 2008, the focus of Dr. Talbot’s research has been insulin signaling abnormalities in AD and aspects of synaptic pathology in schizophrenia.

While trained broadly in behavioral neuroscience, Dr. Talbot’s particular expertise lies in neuro-anatomical and neuro-chemical analysis of the mammalian central nervous system. He is a long-term consultant on mouse and rat brain atlases and serves when needed as a dissector for the brain autopsy team of the Center for Neurodegenerative Research at the University of Pennsylvania. His expertise has been called upon as a reviewer for journals such as Biological Psychiatry, Diabetes, Molecular Psychiatry, Schizophrenia Research and as chairman of symposia at the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology and the Society for Neuroscience.

Through Dr. Talbot’s investigation of Alzheimer Disease and Schizophrenia he has established collaborations with investigators across the U.S., Britain, and Singapore, and organized a symposium at the Society for Neuroscience in 2004. He also wrote the first comprehensive review on dysbindin-1 and its protein family for the Handbook of Neurochemistry and Molecular Neurobiology (3rd ed., in press, 2008).

Dr. Talbot stays up to date on advances in the industry by reading his favorite publication, Neuron, and is affiliated with the Society for Neuroscience. Among many accolades he received the Shepard Ivory Franz Teaching Award from UCLA and the T.L.L. Temple Foundation Discovery Award from the Alzheimer Disease Association.

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ mission is to provide vital public engineering services in peace and war to strengthen U.S. security, energize the economy, and reduce risks from disasters. The Corps is a great engineering force of highly disciplined people working with partners to deliver innovative and sustainable solutions to the Nation’s engineering challenges.

The Engineering Division plans, designs and develops civil works projects; coordinates hydrological and hydraulic engineering activities; performs water control management and water quality activities relative to the planning, design, construction and operation of navigation projects, single and multi-purpose reservoir projects and flood protection projects.

The Jacksonville District is the second largest civil works district in the nation and maintains an extremely complex system of flood control works. Projects are often designed for multi-purpose uses, such as storage of water for municipal and industrial use, navigation, irrigation, development of hydroelectric power, conservation of fish and wildlife, and recreation. Flood protection is provided through aggressive floodplain management and by providing technical assistance to local governments. By taking advantage of appropriate new technologies and techniques to increase efficiencies, the District will continue to be a pacesetter for the Corps.

Madison Who’s Who Recognizes Prof. Patrick Serruys

The Thoraxcenter in Rotterdam aims to stand out nationally and internationally by continuously promoting quality patient care, scientific research and education. No one knows this better than Doctor Patrick Serruys, the Head of the Interventional Department.

The Thoraxcenter of the Erasmus University Medical Center was founded in 1971 and is an integrated organization of the departments of Cardiology and Cardiothoracic Surgery. It is often the birthplace of great modernization and innovations and has the biggest Heart Valve Bank in Europe.

Erasmus University Rotterdam is an international knowledge workshop for critical thinking and academic training, driven by a strong focus on current social issues. The university concentrates its expertise on issues of management, organization and policy in the public and private sectors, as well as on the field of sickness and health care.

Dr. Patrick Serruys joined the Thoraxcenter in Rotterdam in 1976. Among a variety of accolades, he obtained his doctor’s degree in 1972 from the University of Leuven, where he continued to work for several years in the Cardiology department. In 1986 he obtained his PhD on the thesis: “Transluminal coronary angioplasty: an investigational tool and a non operative treatment of acute myocardial ischemia”.

In his current position, which he has held since, 1988, he specializes in Atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease, medical technology and cardiac imaging. Dr. Serruys is the third doctor in the world to ever place a Stent in a human, and the first in the Netherlands.
