The FBI and Peer-to-Peer Networking

There is very little in the world that people cannot misuse, abuse, or exploit for evil purposes. Sadly, peer to peer networking has joined the ranks. Peer-to-Peer networking allows users connected to the Internet to link other computers world-wide, primarily for the purpose of sharing files. It also allows one to share with other user’s files on their own computer. While this is great in some aspects, it can also be used to engage in illegal activity.

This is why the FBI is now involved. The Bureau is trying to educate and warn citizens about the risks and dangers associated with Peer-to Peer networks on the Internet. The FBI fully supports the development of new technologies, but recognizes that it can be misused. Some of the most recent crimes associated with peer-to-peer networks include:

∙copyright infringement

∙child exploitation and obscenity

∙computer hacking

The FBI urges you to learn about the risks and dangers of these networks, along with the legal consequences involved. They take their responsibility very seriously and encourage citizens to learn how to protect themselves.
