Peer to Peer Networking and Mentorship

mentoring

Peer to peer networking via the internet has not only greatly expanded an individual’s ability to promote themselves and their business, it has also proved to be exceptionally valuable in the mentoring opportunities that, prior to the internet, would not have been possible. For the college student or new grad intimidated by standard networking, the growing availability of E-mentoring is an excellent way to become comfortable.

“…some say virtual business mentors are the next logical step. E-Mentoring is a phenomenon that occurs when professionals agree to dole out career advice a few short lines at a time over e-mail.

“It’s certainly not a 9-5 job,” says Mira Funari, a public relations specialist. Traditional mentoring programs would take up more time than Funari has to spare, which is why she says E-Mentoring is perfect for her. “If I don’t get a chance to answer an e-mail on a weekday, I can follow up on a Saturday or Sunday and still know that I’m fulfilling my end of the bargain,” she explains.”

For both mentor and mentees alike, the online relationship is valuable. So much so that college alumni and career centers have programs to connect students with mentors. Or simply google “e-mentoring” + your career to seek out possibilities, though it is cautioned that online connections may cost while the university’s offerings are likely to be free.
