Global Networking Interludes

sorrento
One of the definite perks of accepting international assignments or just regularly traveling the global network are the opportunities to visit beautiful pockets of serenity for a one or two day respite from the grind. The Sorrento Peninsula promises a soft landing and an interval of ancient and commanding beauty.

“With its acres of lemon groves, multi-coloured buildings and a backdrop of Mount Vesuvius and the Bay of Naples, Sorrento is ideal for a weekend away.

The Sorrentina Peninsula has always had a beguiling allure. Today it is as popular with modern Europeans looking for culture in near-by Pompeii as it was with Roman emperors – Augustus is said to have built a villa here.

Wander down narrow cobbled streets that sprawl from its main square, Piazza Tasso; people watch from the roof gardens of the many bars and cafés; or brush up on classical history with a trip to Pompeii or shop on the irresistibly chic (and expensive) island of Capri, reached by hydrofoil from the Marina Piccola (£10.50 each way).”

You can rent an audio guide as you tour Pompeii and ponder the 79AD eruption of Mt. Vesuvius. Luckily that era was spared the global warming cacophony and you could trust that much of today’s noisy world will be silenced in this time soaked land. Take in the Thermae, or Roman baths, at Herculaneum or study the paintings left by the cult of Dionysus.
